Navigating Skilled Migration Visa Options

Australia’s skilled migration program offers several visa pathways for qualified professionals. Understanding the requirements and choosing the right subclass can make all the difference in a successful application.

1. Points-Based System Overview

The General Skilled Migration (GSM) program uses a points test to rank applicants. Points are awarded for age, English ability, work experience, qualifications and more. You need at least 65 points to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI).

2. Key Visa Subclasses

  • Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent): No state sponsorship required. Invitation based solely on points rank.
  • Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated): Requires nomination by an Australian state or territory. Extra 5 points.
  • Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional): Regional state nomination; 5-year provisional visa with pathway to permanent residency.

3. Meeting Skill & Age Requirements

You must have your occupation on the relevant Skilled Occupation List and pass an authority assessment from a registered assessing body. Younger applicants (25–32) earn maximum points.

4. State Nomination & Regional Options

Each state publishes its own nomination criteria and occupation priority lists. Consider regional visas if you’re open to living outside major cities—you’ll gain extra points and lower competition.

5. Lodging Your EOI & Application

Create an EOI in SkillSelect, wait for an invitation, then apply within 60 days. Prepare accurate documents—English tests, skills assessments, health checks—to avoid delays.
